Brora

Brora Front Shore May for blog

Nope – not some foreign shore.  This is Brora.

A small highland village nestling at the mouth of the River Brora is where I call home.  Brora is in Sutherland and sits on the A9 road more or less half way between John O’Groats and Inverness.

Anyone taking the NorthCoast500 road trip will pass through.  But unless you stop you won’t know what you’re missing!

We used to be a hive of industry.  Coal mine, brick works and woollen mill were all once well established, thriving businesses.  Sadly all gone now.

But…. we still have a distillery producing Clynelish Malt Whisky, a world class links Golf Course, a successful football team, popular Bowling Club and a busy wee harbour.

The village centre is home to some lovely shops including a vintage store, gift shop, tweed & woollens shop.

Head towards the sea, North or South of the river mouth and you can walk for miles and miles.

To the North you’ll follow the Brora Golf Course and once past there will be heading towards Loth and Helmsdale.

The walk south is along the Back Shore – a more rocky beach but you’ll see seals and bird life, keep going and you’ll be at Carn Liath Broch and Dunrobin Castle.

  1. I love Brora ..it is where I grew up and where I had a wonderful mum and dad and kind people to remember…The gaping hole their passing over forty years ago can only be filled by beautiful Brora and my childhood memories the good bits were all there. Thanks Brora from Evelyn Capaldi xxxx
